It's used if (and only if) you forget your own defined BIOS password.
If you disconnect the motherboard battery, your CMOS settings will
discharge and the password is replaced by a hard-coded default which
you then change again for your own password.

What happens if you don't know the default password? I don't know.
Maybe AMI could tell you what it is.
