CD-ROM -- Problem installing

I'm trying to upgrade my 4/66 Dell XPS' 2x Creative
CD drive to a generic 16x EIDE CD drive.
The problem is that as soon as the DOS driver starts
loading it hangs up momentarily and says "Port 170h Slave
Found ****", (*==funny characters) "PIO mode." I can
get around this IF I disconnect the IDE cable
before the driver starts loading, then I get a "drive not
ready" message before reconnecting the cable again, at which
point it installs and then runs successfully.
I'm going through the IDE 2 port and using
an older IDE cable, it has no missing pin hole.
Would it help to get a cable with the missing
pin hole, is that the problem? Help!

                                        RayO
