With the help given to me from my original post I went back and
tackled the problem refreshed! I took the whole thing apart and then
put it back together and the problem has gone. I think the problem
was probably due to a dodgy contact between SIMM and socket (I have a
couple with soldered connectors). The reason I didn't think it was
that initially was that it had gone through the POST RAM OK and only
after accessing the floppy (no hard drive present to keep things
simpler!) did it crash out. Therefore it appears that the boot up RAM
check is not 100% reliable?
Thanks to all for the help and sorry to waste bandwidth on
something that seems to have been so simple.
