Here's a copy of a private email msg to someone with first hand experience on the subject: On Sat, 6 Dec 97 00:36:17 +0000, you wrote: >I have a Tyan Titan Turbo II (s1571s) Mo-Bo with an AMD K6-233. Can't remember exactly which one though. However, I did come across more detailed info on Tyan's own web page in a FAQ. Here's the relevant section: Question: Why doesn't My system recognize some of the Seagate hard drives? Answer: A hard disk interface chip used in certain Seagate hard drives has a compatibility problem with the Intel PIIX4 chipset, and all of the TX series have this PIIX4 I/O controller installed. This Arizona interface chip used has a problem with host PIIX4 chipset in a way that PIIX4 output is at 3.3V, but for the Seagate Arizona chip, it's minimum input level for a valid "high" is set at 3.3V. Therefore, signal comes out of PIIX4 can not be recognized by the Arizona interface chip sometimes. Seagate will provide Galileo Rev."B" interface chip to correct this problem. The known Seagate hard drive models have Arizona interface chip are: ST31276A ST32531A ST33240A ST31720A Also, someone else responded to my usenet post & claimed that they found a list of all Seagate drives incompatible with the 430TX chipset on Seagate's own home page. However, I spent nearly an hour yesterday searching for it using their in-house search engine with absolutely no luck. Now I'm really really nervous about my planned upgrade. My two-year old Seagate model # ends in an 'A' (ST-3851A) & the Shuttle HOT-565 MB I had my eye on uses the TX chipset. I have a lousey $300 to purchase components for my upgrade -- mainboard, video, & cpu -- & can't afford to make the slightest miscalculation. If I find any additional info on the subject, I'll keep you posted and hopefully you'll do the same for me. Later. Best, Joe (aka Midgard) To reply via email, remove '-nospam-' in return address.

Don't worry about the "A" - that's just Seagate's way of telling you
it's an IDE drive.

found this problem myself this weekend with a st31621a wasn't on a list of affected drives but as soon as I upgraded the mother board to a tx and booted up it trashed all the info on the drive found a small sheet of paper in a previous upgrades mb box from a open to up vio to 3.52 worked Chris Quirke wrote in message <66n4lj$k07$5@news01.iafrica.com>... >Bob Goddard <Bob@nospam.demon.co.uk> wrote: >>In article <66bqev$fom@mtinsc03.worldnet.att.net>, Midgard > >>>The known Seagate hard drive >>>models have Arizona interface chip are: > >>>ST31276A ST32531A ST33240A ST31720A > >>>My two-year old Seagate model # ends in an 'A' (ST-3851A) > >>Don't worry about the "A" - that's just Seagate's way of telling you >>it's an IDE drive. > >Yup. Yup. Worry instead about the xxx1 part; according to Seagate, unless that's the 6.4G ST-xxx1A, it's going to bomb on TX, as will any ST-xxx0A model number. New ST-xxx2A's are OK for TX, but many still look suspiciously like the old Conner bottom-feeders. >-------------- ----- ---- --- -- - - - - When no-one is innocent, everyone is paranoid

I contacted *both* the maufacturer of the TX motherboard I'm buying (Shuttle HOT-569) & Seagate and they informed me that there should be no problem using the ST-3851A with an Intel 430TX chipset. : Best, Midgard To reply via email, remove '-nospam-' in return address.

Glad to hear it. I hope it works out OK - let us know how you get on.
Meanwhile... why spoil a perfectly good argu^H^H^H discussion? ;-)

Yes, you are correct, it WILL work, but the performance is Piss poor, and not recommended...... I am on my third ST-3851A drive and it will NOT go in a Intel Motherboard. They all failed resulting in loosing data.

Re the Seagate chipset incompatibility:
My f.n.disk-guru, who builds quite a lot of computers, and who,
being commercial, is far too busy to read d.t.pc, was extemely
grateful for a copy of some of this thread. He'd just spent half
a day trying to work out why a new m/board and new Seagate would
not co-exist .....
Thanks all around.
