I had the same problem. I found that my motherboard had "multiple
block transfer" enabled by default. This gives a significant disk
speed improvement but it causes the CPU to ignore interrupts for
longer periods of time. The real fix is to get 16550A FIFO UARTS
but if you disable "multiple block transfer" in the BIOS setup it
should get you going again. I also found that running SMARTDRV
helps reduce serial problems with the older UARTS.
