Troubleshooting guide for the Cardinal MVP288I and MB288XF modems
6/19/95

PROBLEM #1 "My modem fails to initialize"

ANSWER: If you have an external modem, and you DO NOT have an 16550
UART
chip on your motherboard or I/O controller, you can not set the baud
rate
higher than 19,200. If you have an Internal 28.8, the 16550 UART is
built
on the modem and does support the baud rate of 115,200. If you are
having
difficulties making the modem initialize, make sure the modem is not
on a
comm port that is shared by an external serial port or on an IRQ that
is
being used by another device in your system.

PROBLEM #2 "I can't connect at 28.8"

ANSWER: Most phone companies DO NOT support a speed above 14.4 even
though
it is most likely that it will go faster. A typical phone line is
compressed at the switch using ADPCM and routed through miles and
miles of cable,
causing the line quality and signal to diminish. If you are
connecting at
a rate of 21.6 or above, this is normal. NOTE: Please refer to the
users
manual for the line signal/quality test command.

PROBLEM #3 "The Faxworks program that came with my modem will not
initialize,
 but everything else works fine!"

ANSWER: You need to edit the FAXWORKS.INI file. Go to the section
[MODEM]
and change the line RESET STRING= to RESET STRING=AT&F&S1

PROBLEM #4 "I am trying to connect to a BBS or Online service at
14.4 or
above and it only connects at 9600!"

PROBLEM #5 "My modem is set up properly, but sometimes it drops
connections
or has trouble establishing a connection"

ANSWER: Check to see what version of firmware the modem has by
sending an
"ati3" command to the modem. If it is v1.0, it is
recommended that
you download v1.20 from our BBS or America Online.

ANSWER: If you are using a Windows 3.1 based communications
software, it
must be able to support high speed. The standard Windows comm.drv
will not
support 28.8 unless the communications software modifies it. The
COMit software
we supply changes the comm driver to comm.drv=twcomm.drv. To find
out what
comm.drv you are currently using, view the system.ini located in the
c:\Windows\
 directory under the [boot] section.

To find out if the modem is at it's optimal settings, issue the modem
AT+MS? <RETURN> through a communication program with a terminal mode.
It should echo back 11,1,300,28800. If it does not, type
AT+MS=11,1,300,28800 <RETURN>

If you type AT+MS? again and the last number is below 28800, you need
to check to
make sure you have an enhanced Windows comm.drv or a 16550 UART chip.

the I/O card)
Flow Control = Hardware or RTS/CTS
Autobaud = OFF

FAX SETTINGS
Init string = AT&F&C1&DS
CLASS 2 recommended
