I have listed below all the suggestions I have collected and tried for making Winfax 7.0 work with the Sporster Vi. A few pertain specifically to overseas faxing, but these won't adversely affect local. Making various USR modems work with Winfax is something I've been working on for years, but their new 33.6 Vi's are the most frustrating yet (I've tried two Vi's, both with a Supervisor date of Oct 95.) I should warn you, however, that though some of these suggestions help, the only thing that really solved my problems was junking my USRs and buying SupraFAXmodems (not the Express models). I'm posting these suggestions since not everyone can afford to do that, but if you can, do so - it will save you sanity in the end. Good Luck, Tom Malcolmson Sportster/Winfax 7.02 suggestions Alternative Modem Initialization Strings: (Spaces and bold within the initialization strings are only for readability.) modem init string: flow control: USR T/S suggestion for Overseas faxing: "S10 register to 10 or 11 to also allow you to take greater line hits" Default for USR Sportster AT&F&C1&D2&H1 S7=55 AT&H1 (&C1 = CD - Carrier Detect; &D2 = DTR - Data Terminal Ready) From Delrina FAX T/S, Feb/96 - for overseas? AT&F&H1&R2 S36=0 AT&H1&R2 USR official suggestion for WinFax 4.0: AT&F&H3&I2&R2 S7=90S36=0 (S36 optional) From Delrina T/S rep Feb/96 - official string for USR & WF7 AT&F&H3&I2&R2 S7=90S36=0 AT&H1&I2&R2 (ie. Hard & Soft FC) My Current Best Bet: AT&F&H3&I2&R2 S7=90S9=1S10=11S32=16S36=0 AT&H1&I2&R2 Legend: Flow Control - &H1 is TD (Transmit Data) only on CTS (Clear to Send) - ie. TD Hard FC - &R2 is RD (Received Data) to computer only on RTS (request to send) - ie. RD Hard FC S Registers - S7 is the number of seconds the modem waits for a carrier. - S9 is the required duration (1/10s) of destination's carrier signal - S10 is how long the modem wait (1/10s) after loss of carrier before hanging up. - S32 is classified (seriously!). - S36 is classified. Other suggestions: In Modem Properties under the Setup menu: - switch the modem from the TAPI port to COMx port. (not really practical) - Turn off ECM for send and receive under Options - Turn off 'High Speed Compression(2D)' under Options - Set the Maximum Transmission Speed lower (9600) to account for noise on the phone lines. - Modem Properties, Port Settings: Set Receive Buffer to the 2nd of 4 positions, Transmit Buffer to 3 of 4. Or just disable the FIFO completely since the modem has its own FIFO. - Add ATZ back as the RESET string under modem properties (its dissapearance is a bug).
