Silence of the Modems

After working fine for years, my Netcomm InModem 336 internal
modem has gone mute. The information at www.netcomm.com.au is
not much help for this problem.

I didn't knowingly change anything. It has stopped making sounds
for all of the operating systems on my machine (NT, 95, Linux).

Going to, e.g. Hyperterminal on NT, I can type modem AT commands
to see what's going on. I have the manual that came with the modem,
so I know which AT commands I can use:

AT&V shows the active profile. The values are all the same as
the factory defaults specified in the manual. Specifically,
"M1" is still active (speaker on when dialling, off otherwise),
as is "L3" (high volume level).

In NT, going to Control Panel->Modem, shows that modem speaker
volume is set to maximum. Further going to Connection->Advanced
shows that there is nothing in "Extra settings".

So for all intents and purposes, I think the modem shouldn't be
silent.

Other than the modem sounds, everything about the modem still
works fine.

Do I assume that the modem speakers are zappo kaput? Or can I
blame a virus, Y2001, or Bill Gates?

Struck dumb by what you downloaded thru it most likely.

I've reported you to the RSPUPFOM

Its a pretty standard Lucent chipset Winmodem.

Yep, specially not in all OSs.

Yep.

You're welcome to blame all those. Its just the 'speaker' thats
died tho. Doesnt really qualify as a speaker, its a tiny little piezo.
