I'd be grateful if anyone would enlighten me as to why I get 40% less internet connection throughput on my laptop when compared to my desktop system. Typically I get an absolute connect speed of between 44k & 46k on both systems. This is a bit slow but still within expectations. However, when monitoring the throughput using TP Connect or Windows system monitor, I get an average throughput (using std test files on modem help web sites) of 5k+cps on my desktop, and 3k+cps on my laptop. I've repeated these tests many times, and general surfing is definitely slower. I use a std Demon SDU account. Both systems use a fresh install of Win98 with all the updates. Both systems use the same BT tel. socket. I've checked the BT line and it's OK as far as I can detect. I've checked all registry settings are the same on both machines using MTU. I've checked all windows settings I can think of are the same. Both machines use Pace 56k voice modems, Int ISA on the desktop, and PCMCIA on the notebook. Both modems have latest version V90 drivers, which appear to be virtually identical, as are the chipsets. My desktop machine is 233MHz mmx Pentium, and notebook is 300MHz AMD K2. Both machine have fast Uarts. I've tried removing the modems and re-installing but no difference. It's rather frustrating, to say the least, to lose out by 40% when I have to use my laptop. Can anyone suggest a cure? TIA Howard.
