Best Data ACE-5000 28.8 -- when???

I have the ACE-5000 modem/sound card from Best Data.
Around the beginning of the year they notified me that
a 28.8 upgrade would be available in March. I sent my
money for one. Toward the end of March I got this post
card saying that the upgrade would ship during the month
of May. It never came.

Around October I called Best Data and asked them where
my upgrade was. A very unhelpful man there told me that
there was a delay in the drivers they needed. It was all
IBM's fault since they were supplying the drivers, he
said. When I asked when I could expect my upgrade, I
could get no solid answers.

I'm wondering if anyone out there knows what's going on
with the upgrade, the supposed missing drivers, etc. Has
anyone else been ripped-off by this??

I have several ACE 5000 cards. If you look at the diskettes supplied by
Best, you'll notice that the copyright is IBM's. IBM provides ALL of
the drivers that make the ACE work as a modem, fax, or voicemail
product. The application software comes from a variety of other
vendors.

When I contatced the company last December, IBM had committed to ship
final release drivers in January. A call to IBM confirmed this. For
some reason, IBM has not delivered the drivers to Best. When I spoke
with an IBM representative at DSPx last May, they told me that they
were stopping all development on the "old" processors (including the
one Best uses).

To find out the real facts about IBM's plans, you might call their
MWAVE Marketing Manager in Raliegh NC. The last time I knew, his name
was David McLean.

Also, you might write a letter to Bruce Zaman (President of Best Data)
and ask for a refund on the upgrade. I've always found Zaman to be an
honest fellow who does care about his products and customers.
