A friend of mine has a Compaq Presario 425 and wants to install a new
modem. The problem is that disabling the built in modem via the setup
program doesn't work well enough- and Compaq wants to charge $35 to tell
him which jumper is used to fully disable it! Does anyone know where this
jumper is- or who to speak to? Thanks alot!

I've got the Presario 425 too. Called Compaq (pay by the minute 900
line) they said go into C-MOS and disable the serial port (there's two
lines-one says port-one says modem)-do both----it worked for me. then I
put in a new I/O card (my 425 had a 8250 UART) and ran my new Cardinal
28,000 through the 9 pin async serial conector and it worked the first
time (I'm still running 3.1). Wonder what this info cost my phone bill.
When I bought my Compaq ages ago they were a nice company. $35.00 for
help on something they built into the unit. Last one of theirs I buy!
But the Cardinal seems to work fine.
