I posted a question regarding mixing 30 pin and 72 pin SIMMs on the same mother board. THANKS a lot to all of you for clarifying the issue to me. Below is the summary of responses. 1. It is NOT UNUSUAL for motherboards of that era to have only 2 72 pin slots and to have a 4 30-pin bank. 2. READ the fine manual. Unfortunately, for me, the system did not come with manual and when I contacted the seller, I was told that it was assembled in far east (read Taiwan) and that the assembler can not be bothered by me. The seller (Midwest Micro) did fax me 4-5 pages of material that implied that, yes, I could have the mix of the memory. 3. However, since 30 pin SIMMs are getting obsolete, I am better off buying 2 of 8MB, and discarding current 2 of 4MB SIMMS. Even better, just buy one 4x32 16MB SIMM, keep one 1x32 4MB SIMM, for a total of 20 MB, and donate/junk the other 4MB piece. *** I am buying 1 of 16MB, keeping 1 of 4MB, selling/donating other 4MB** If you have read this far, THANKS again. I have additional questions. 1. Newer 16MB SIMMs are rated 60ns, my two existing 4MB SIMMs are 70ns. Would they work together? Midwest Micro(SALES!) says yes, but they are sales. Midwest Micro's tech support is researching the issue. I want to hear your opinions, URL references, etc. 2. The VESA board in my computer supports only 540 MB. Should I put a promise card to have extra capacity (up to 1.6GB) or just put up with 540 MB only D: drive. C:, the existing drive, is about 480. It is for home use, and it may be 2-3 years before 540 gets full. By then, it may not do much good to have 1.6 GB drive, on a 486 machine, if software is being written for 986 ;-) 3. HOWEVER, my spouse, a CS student, would like to install Win 95! Is 540 MB too little for Win 95? (I was horrified to see that a single compiler took more than 100 MB space!) Would appreciate your comments. --raj (raj@goliath.stanford.edu) -- -- Rajesh Kumar Singh E-mail: raj@goliath.stanford.edu Gauls! We have nothing to fear; except perhaps that the sky may fall on our heads tomorrow. But as we all know, tomorrow never comes!!
