[ Article crossposted from comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.cd-rom ] [ Author was Michael Hooten ] [ Posted on 6 Dec 1994 06:35:20 GMT ] I am contemplating buying a 2x CD-ROM drive, a 16-bit sound card, and speakers. I do not want to buy really cheap or really expensive products, preferrably something that is moderately priced. Initially, the products will be used for software such as Encarta or Bookshelf. (BTW, if anyone knows who makes the best CD encyclopedia, I would love to know: MS, Compton's, other.) I intend to play DOOM at some point because I have heard so many references to it. However, if I should desire to undertake more ambitious endeavors (sound editing, etc.) with these products, the products should not limit me too much. I have heard about compatibility problems with the Ensoniq sound card, but I do not know if it is true. The CD-ROM should be reliable. The sound card should be compatible. And the speakers must be clear. I am interested in spending no more than $350. I realize that I am not going to get the highest quality products for this amount of money; however, I would like to make an informed purchase. I prefer to buy a bundled packaged. (Why are the bundled CDs so lame? Any suggestions as to choices?) I will use these components in Windows, primarily, and OS/2. If described components cannot be purchased at this price, please suggest the best products in this price range. Please e-mail any responses. Thank you so very much for your time. Michael J.
