Even with an impossibly remote scenario of say a virus deliberately
overwriting the master boot record of a drive formatted using LBA
mode, with a valid CHS mast boot record for that particular physical
drive, which might well make the data appear to vanish, that STILL
doesnt explain the fact that when Ian replaced the master boot record
the copying of what data could be seen took a long time with
obvious retrys and recals and getting the data eventually.

It has always been much more likely that it wasnt the use of
AUTO settings at all but just an intermittent hardware failure.
