www.computer123.com want to charge $53 USD to send a small SCSI card.
Think Ill give it a miss! (Unless their charge calculator is broken - I
routinely get 6 or so DVD's send, and it costs about $9)

Whe ordering from international stores what is the deal with import taxes???
Because it comes through Australia POst or what not does that mean you dont
have to pay any taxes.

Basically you pay the sales tax on entry. And thats calculated
on 120% of the converted price for complicated reasons.

But if the sales tax due is less than $50, they dont bother to charge it.

Thats right. Tho they can be rather erratic and some stuff
doesnt get charge sales tax even when that is over $50.

When stuff is imported using one of the other carriers like say
FedEx, you are much less likely to not get charged what is due.

Sorry, but is this correct? 120% on the converted price?

If I want to buy a Riva TNT from the US @ $US 139 = $ AUS 240 would I
end up paying another 120%! ie total of $528????

this is madness... of course, with the GST it would only be 10% - yeah
right.......

heh gst will come in if you believe that

last time i imported and paid tax on stuff it was

the price of the good + $30 inspection fee + shipping + 22.5 % of the
price of the good [ie it's declared value]

No, he's saying the sales tax is calculated on 120% of the purchase price. So
if you bought a Riva for $A 240, and the sales tax was 22%, you'd pay
1.2*240*.22 =$63.

So what are the complicated reasons?

120% of the converted price, which isnt quite the same thing.

> If I want to buy a Riva TNT from the US @ $US 139 = $ AUS 240

Nope, you'd pay sales tax of 22% on 120% of the
converted price. 120% of the converted price of A$240
is $288, so you'd pay sales tax of 22% of that, $63.

Total cost to you of $303.

> this is madness...

It would be if it was true, but it isnt.

> of course, with the GST it would only be 10% - yeah right.......

Yep, right.

Yep.

> So what are the complicated reasons?

Its basically an attempt to make it comparable to local purchases tax
wise. Some bureaucratic insanity to do with a purported retail price etc.

Your usename did turn into a rather hilarious contraction |-)

120% my ass, it's only 47% the most i've had shipped in was $150 US worth
of DVD's and i wasn't charged anything.

you can get the company to put an invoice on the package to say it's only
worth 1/2 of the actual price, they'd prob do it.

Thats just stating the percentage a different way.

Yeah, they often dont bother with the low
priced stuff, particularly if it comes in by post.

> you can get the company to put an invoice on the package

Most wont, largely because they have completely automated invoicing systems.
Some certainly will. One bugger was so keen that he took all the identification
stuff off the item, and posted that separately, without me even asking.
