On downloading the driver I noticed on Intel's site (they bought out Xircom in March 2001) that there was a version that was for cardbus cards and another for "non-cardbus" ones!! Having been thru agony getting the TP 560X cardbus PCMCIA port up and working I think I now recognise the significance of that. (I still don't know what is in the "image" of the Windows 95B system files I had to buy via CD-ROM from IBM that makes the cardbus work. Nor does IBM tech support for that matter!! Installing from a generic Win95B source resulted in the cardbus being exceptioned out on startup but which could be activated on a session by session basis by reinstalling the driver on the fly!). Xircom products have a good reputation but I don't think it is the "quality" of the card that accounts for my success. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has a *cardbus* ethernet card for sale. An old 10 Mb/s one will do (I'm not flush with money!). The PCMCIA industry got into somewhat of a mess - the usual syndrome of competing commercial interests upsetting general interoperability. Cards not designed for the cardbus PCMCIA port are iffy as to whether they will work with computers with cardbus PCMCIA ports (is the opposite true?). The TP 560X uses the Texas Instruments "PCI-1250 Cardbus Controller". Most PCMCIA cards around seem to be non-cardbus ones. That explains my difficulties which have not been dispelled.
