We are planning to install an ethernet LAN with PC's in a building of our university where people experiment with power electricity (very high voltages, currents, and their switching). Therefor we are somewhat concerned about the electrical isolation between the ethernet PC cards and the attached LAN cables (due to EMC problems). Although we had isolation data about older (separate) transceivers here specifying isolation voltages of about 3 Kvolts, such data doesn't seem available for the ethernet cards (with built-in transceivers) now widely in use on the university campus. The local sales offices doesn't seem capable of passing us such data. The cards at hand are: 3COM Etherlink III 3C509 and SMC-Ultra 16bit ethernet. Can anybody on the net HELP us? Are their important differences (with respect to EMC protection) between (thin) coax and twisted pair that we should know of before making a decision between those? Any help will be greatly appreciated! -- Jos T.J. van Eijndhoven Dept. of Elec.
