My thanks to you and others who contributed to comment about my drives.  
It is all working now, although I'm still not sure why.

I had tried enabling extended CHS translation before, but when I tried to 
boot off the disk, MSDOS croaked before the prompt and before I had always 
retreated back to standard CHS.  Anyway this time I was bolder and I again 
enables the extended CHS translation and found that when booting from 
floppy, the disk was readable and MSD showed 529 cylinders of 32 heads.

So. as an experiment, I SYSed msdos onto the drive once more, without 
either reformatting of FDISKing and it all worked. DOS booted and scandisk 
can read the entire disk error-free.

Now I'll get down to the FAQ and see if I can figure the jumpers to allow 
one ST6330A to be an ATA master and the second the slave.  The intuitive 
answer of master with no jumpers and the intended slave with 7-8 jumpered 
is not yet working.
