Hi I have just bought a Seagate Decathalon 850 (ST 5850A) hard drive. I have a mother board with a 1995 Award BIOS and am trying to have the drive as a master to a 340 Seagate. Unfortunately the new drive seems to "lock up". It can stop the boot up process, or I have had it happen while trying to xcopy files over from my old drive or when running a program from Windows when it gets that far. The only thing that I can see that I might have done wrong is to accept the BIOS settings as suggested by the autodetect which results in setting the drive up with twice the heads and half the cylinders (i.e. as 828 cyl, 32 head,, 63 sec instead of 1656, 16, 32 as given in the installation guide.) I can't see that this would cause this problem but before formatting and setting the drive up again I would be very grateful for some advice. Is it possible that the drive is duff, or are there changes in some other BIOS setting required that were not for my 340? Thanks in advance for any help Al al@alcarg.demon.co.uk
