The diagnostic package I use has this option - It is called Microscope
and I got it mainly for LLF of IDE Drives.

It reads the configuration from the controller and uses this to
reformat the disk so can cope with most variations (all those I have
come across).

You lose all your data of course and have to repartition to disk
but it saves having to get the drive repaired in many cases.
