Recovering ASCII data from reformatted hard drive

I've searched 9000 newsgroups and this seems the closest to
the subject. Last summer, with temperatures as high as 113
Fahrenheit, one of the two 1.2 Gig hard drives (Western
Digital) to which data was being written suddenly went
bonkers.

The dealer decided the Pentium system was running too hot
and installed an additional fan (for the CPU) and
reformatted the Drive D:.

Everybody told me at the time that my ASCII capture file
data was permanently lost and nothing could recover it.
However, PC TOOLS V. 7 had no trouble showing me all of the
data using the Hex editor and it was possible to search
throughout 400 megs of data for specific information.

But what I would like to do is to turn the completely empty
disk drive into something like 120 10 Meg data files which
could be moved to floppies, tape or whatever. The data is
quite redundant for the most part and compresses 99% with
PKZIP from my experience with similar data on another
computer.

Is there some method by which an artificial FAT can be
written either by hand or through some inexpensive program
so that the data is packaged into files?

There is no need to salvage any executable files nor to even
be able to see those. Everything that is useful is in the
form of ASCII capture files.

I've avoided using the drive until I could come up with a
solution but I'm about ready to give up. Help would be
greatly appreciated.
