"invalid media type reading drive D:"

It seems that i am getting this error message when i try to access my
second hard drive. And it is scaring the living shit out of me.

It all started with a new drive 525 meg Quantum drive i bought last year.
All was fine for a while. The a few weeks ago a couple of bad sectors
popped up. My local computer guru friend told me he fixed the problem. I
believed him (foolish me). Then today, i was doing some work in Windows,
copying a pair of rather large data files from one directory on my D: drive
to another directory one level up. Not a big deal, i'd done it many times
already that day, and in the previous weeks. However, this time it gave me
an error in windows trying to read the file, sying something like "cannot
read sector information" or some crazy bullshit like that, i was too busy
panicking to notice what the error actually was. I then exited windows and
attempted to do a directory listing of the D: drive and i got the error
message shown in the subject field. DOH!! Anyway, i couldn't read any of
the files on the drive, I couldn't do chkdsk on the drive. I only have DOS
5.0 so i couldn't use scandisk to see what's up, tho i was going to get it
soon so that i could defrag my drive. I have a virus checker, but of
course it's on my D: drive, so i can't use it. Not like it would matter,
since every program i tried to run that accesses the C: drive gives an
error message or says "invalid media type reading drive D:". Now comes the
neat part. When i finally got back into windows (which required me
chopping up my win.ini file removing all references to the D: drive so that
it would even start up) and used the file manager to examine the contents
of the D:. it D: is the first to be checked when the file manager starts
up, it says no files are there, even though it also says that 280 or so
megs of the drive are being used (there were about 350 before this all
happened.) If the C: or E: (two partitions of my old drive) drives are
examined first, all is fine, but then when i try D: again, it either gives
me bizarre characters as directories, or makes about 30 duplicates of each
of the directories on C: and duplicates them on D:, with subfiles being
garbage. And every time i'd switch between C: and D:, the directories or
garbage would be different, and the bytes left counter would say some weird
other number too. Then there were 2 files in the D: drive, it said, and
together they were 780 megs, while the bytes left counter said 300 megs
free. (do the math, that's just not right, it's a 525 meg drive!!)

Anyway, the point to all this is just how fubared am I? Is the info on
this drive recoverable? If so, how do i do it? Is it because of the bad
sectors? Is it a virus? Is my C: drive safe? HELP!!!

E-mail would be appreciated (as long as my C: drive doesn't die as well!)

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

Adrian
