Hi there, my fathers PC is a Dell Dimension P3 about 2 years old with a 40 GB harddrive and Win ME. Recently when doing a normal(standard) ScanDisc the utility requested the "intensive" mode and a restart. During this intensive mode after some hours (just before finishing the 1.2 mega part testing) the program crashed just leaving coloured lines on the screen. Restarting the PC leads to the same thing. Once he requested a boot disk before coming to the ScanDisc part. What could be the reason for that? (Harddisk surface defects?, a virus?) How can I fix it? (is there a DOS prg doing that HD scan/repair job?) Thanks a lot Tom.

I cant say I have ever seen Scandisk ever do that, switch to 'intensive' mode spontaneously. You sure it was actually the standard scandisk that comes with ME ? > During this intensive mode after some hours (just before finishing > the 1.2 mega part testing) the program crashed just leaving coloured > lines on the screen. Restarting the PC leads to the same thing. That last is certainly normal, it will run scandisk on the next boot if restarted. > Once he requested a boot disk before coming to the ScanDisc part. Not sure what you mean by that either, 'requested a boot disk' > What could be the reason for that? (Harddisk surface defects?, a virus?) Dunno, sounds more like its not the standard scandisk that comes with ME. > How can I fix it? (is there a DOS prg doing that HD scan/repair job?) Yes, in fact you can hold the ctrl key down during the boot, get a menu of options, select the command prompt entry and then type scandisk c: at the prompt. That will run the dos version of scandisk and that will sometimes succeed if you're just seeing a situation where the win version of scandisk gets very confused about what it sees on the drive. Thats not normally surface defects, usually the file system has got a bit scrambled, often fixably scrambled.
