Hi all, I have a Panasonic CR588 32x IDE CD-ROM after returning the CR586 model. I have exactly the same problem with the newer one. I am using Windows 98. 1. When I insert an audio CD the whole computer stalls, I cannot move the mouse. 2. When I play the CD the system stalls as above. 3. When I skip tracks the CD-Player (any I am using) loses the information and it says "data or disc not loaded" and then it flicks back again. 4. I can't fast forward in audio tracks like I can on a stereo or like I could on my old 6x Panasonic. 5. On some CDR media the drive whirrs up and down and takes ages to read the disc. 6. I can't use Audiograbber ASPI or Easy CD-DA Extractor 2.75 to rip audio, it says cannot find ASPI driver. I have the latest Adaptec ones installed because I have a CDR as well. Can these problems be fixed or are they just characteristics of the Panasonic 32x CD-ROMs? Does the same problem exist with the 24x? I was under the impression that Panasonics were the best. Thanks, please email suggestions.

I don't know of any problems similar to the ones you are describing. The company for whom I work shift hundreds of PC's every week, all of which are fitted with either CR-587 or CR-588 drives and Win98 preloaded. No problems at all, apart from the occaisional faulty drive...... Alex wrote: > Hi all, > > I have a Panasonic CR588 32x IDE CD-ROM after returning the CR586 model. Hey Rick...the CR586 is a 32x not a 24x.

You were wrong to return your CD-ROM... there is no way that your problems are due to bad hardware... it would seem more like you have a set up problem with Win 98 (who doesn't). When CD-ROMs go bad they genrally just do not work, and do not actually kill your system. It probably due to the driver you are using.... the bane of Win 98. Boz. I remember reading that u had to get some scsi??.vxd driver from the sony site (dont ask me why scsi) but when I did this it worked for me. This info might be buried in the audio grabber docs somewhere. (cant remember where I saw it).
