Be very careful in an attempt to purchase a SEAGATE 3200 3.2 Gig capacity tape drive. First of all the 'true' capacity is 1.6 gig uncompressed. And the drive is essentially useless without a high speed controller card. This is where the interesting part comes in. Apparently there are many submodels of the 3200 which both Seagate and the vendors refuse to mention. One comes only with tape drive, without controller or tape, and another comes with both the controller and tape. There is another model which apparently comes with some extra software instead of a 1.6 gig tape. I recently ordered a Seagate 3200, and *specifically* asked about and was *REASSURED* that the drive CAME WITH TAPE *AND* CONTROLLER. A week later it comes in and I open the box, and voila - NO TAPE CONTROLLER or TAPE. I called the company and they admitted the mistake about the controller, but suddenly played dumb about the tape. A call to seagate reveealed the trick about the tape. If they package some useless software, you get screwed out of the tape. Its been over a week, and the vendor still hasnt shipped the tape controller. Supposedly having problems with their supplier. I will post the name, address, and URL of this supplier if it is not shipped in 48 hours.

This is true of all capacities of backup drives but often in practice you can get even more compression than 2x. As was my experince with a Ditto 800MB drive. --- Patrick Dunford, Christchurch, NZ Email Name:pdunford Email Domain:xtra.co.nz

You get more compression because so much of your hard disk is actually slack. Unused space because the actual file is much smaller than the space allocated. Depending on how you have the drive partitioned this can be quite a bit. no.name@spammers.go.away (Patrick Dunford) wrote: >On 6 Nov 1997 12:20:18 GMT, snakeman@turtle.edeneast.com (RHS Linux >User) wrote: >>Be very careful in an attempt to purchase a SEAGATE 3200 3.2 Gig capacity >>tape drive.
