I have a 486 dx2-66 clone system, 3 slot VLB, runs great. Mouse on com1,
modem on com 2. IDE and video cards are VLB. Everything works great,
Doom runs full frame, etc. But: my soundblaster card does not work with
Windows. I have tried everything. It is the soundblaster 2.0 - the old
one, mono only, i got it on sale for $27. Ok, I know, you get what you
pay for. But it really ought to work. Windows thinks no drivers are
installed. I have run from windows the install program
c:\sb\win31\winsetup and also tried manually reinstalling the drivers.
This is driving me crazy. And it is all such regular stuff, it ought to
'just work'. I changed the IRQ on the card and in my autoexec,
reinstalled the whole thing, still no sound. Tried again with orig IRQ
but diff setting on the i/o address (240 not 220) and still no sound. Argh!

What can I do to fix this? Any advice? I need to use this card, it is
someone elses system (a schools, actually) and there is no $ for some
fancy sound card. Thanks,

kevin

#1. make a list of cards and stuff in your slots. Then find the IRQ's for them.
Then look at them to make sure there aren't any conflicts. if there is, change
something around. Windoze is very picky about what goes where.
Don't forget stuff like parallel ports!

#2. check the 'DOh!' type things. like the volume controls, the physical and
the software (sbset.exe), *and* the windows settings.

#3. do a "deltree windows" and *really* start over from scratch. Make sure the dos side of things work (doom or some other game), then re-install windows
and reinstall the sb directory. *and* make sure to run the sb setup on the
windows side.

Are you trying to run DOOM under Windows? I've never been able to do
it reliably, and it's too slow. Try running it from the DOS prompt,
and if that doesn't work, try making a clean boot disk. Myself, I
have multiple configurations (DOS 6.x can do this), with one for DOOM.
Shows you how much I play this game, doesn't it?

Good luck,

Paul
