Besides being personally disappointed with the lack of advanced
features of 3DFX's upcoming Voodoo 3, I have been thinking about how
this could affect the gaming industry as a whole... More than one
developper has hinted that they are coding their present games without
support for 32-bit color and large textures, because the huge
installed base of Voodoo 2, and upcoming Voodoo 3, don't support them.
While Voodoo 3 is a serious comprimise and many know it, it will
likely still sell reasonably well.
While some games will likely push the envelope and let G200, TNT
and Rage 128 owners enjoy their great new features, I can't help but
feel 3DFX has slowed gaming progress somewhat, to all of our
detriment. They have become followers in the sense of innovation, and
leaders in another unfortunate way, market influence.
