Can't cold boot into Windows with Monster Fusion
#241

I'm using a Diamond Monster Fusion AGP card, in an AMD k6-3/Epox main
board system, now going on three months. This past week something very
screwy happened. For some strange reason, from a power off cold boot,
it
won't load into Windows with the Monster Fusion video drivers. After
the
computer does it's thing loading the registry and autoexec.bat, when it
gets ready to start the GUI, I get a blank screen and the computer
freezes.

I have the ctrl-alt-delete or hit the reset button, boot into Safe MOde
and then restart from in Safe Mode. Then I get into Windows just fine.

Also, if I reset the video settings to Standard VGA, I am able to cold
boot into Windows.

I unistalled and reinstalled the video drivers, unseated and reseated
the video card, uninstalled the anti-virus (McAfee) - all to no avail.

Has anyone every had such a problem and how can I fix it? All
responses
appreciated in advance.

If you have IE 5 installed be sure to download the latest drivers from
http://www.diamondmm.com
The latest driver is designed to fix the problem you describe. I had the
same problem. Just bought the card, and naturally there wasn't anything on
the box about being sure to download and install the latest driver if you
running IE5.

Hope this helps.

Mark

This is realy wierd:
1) I'm not using IE 5
and 2) I already tried the latest drivers.

Still won't work.

My friend had this EXACT same problem but with the Creative Labs Banshee
AGP. There seems to be a lot of random problems with the AGP banshee boards.
The solution is to get a PCI version of the Banshee or go with some other
AGP card. The good news is that there is absolutely no performance
difference in the PCI vs AGP banshee cards.

Brad.

This is what I was afraid of. If this is the case, and as I'm out of PCI slots
(& will have to stick with an AGP), anyone got any suggestions on an AGP card
that will work with a Super 7 MB/VIA MVP3 Chipset? All suggestions are
appreciated in advance.

Well, after two go-arounds with Diamond, it definitely turned out to be a
defective card.

A couple of points about all of this:

1) Diamond needs to get their shit together on RMA's. The first card they sent
out was as defective as the original card and it was eight days late.

2) In all this discussion many of us (especially ME) need to remember something:
a black screen lock up is almost always hardware related (I said "almost" so
PULEAZE don't jump down my throat <grin>) and a blue screen lock up is software
related.

I could not install my Win98 with my banshee installed PERIOD..no bios fix,
driver fix..NADA. I had to put another card in,then install win98 and then
replace the banshee. I confirmed this to be a windows problem when I got
win98SE..installed just fine.
