Which card - Voodoo5 or Geforce2?

I am new to this newsgroup, so I will try to be as precise as possible. I have a PII-450MHz, 128SDRAM, 6Gb Hdd, and... I want to upgrade my graphics card from my current, and tortoise-like, STB Velocity 4400, which is based on the NVidia Riva TNT chipset, with 16mb RAM, to either the Voodoo 5 5000 (or 5500) or the Ge-Force 2 chipset-based card. Which is best for playing DVDs? (I am having some problems with my computer and DVDs at the moment.) Would I be better off going for a separate DVD Decoder card like the Sigma Realmagic Hollywood card? Also, what is the difference between the Creative Graphics card which is called the Ge-Force 256 Annihilator Pro and the Ge-Force 2 chipset?? Any help will be greatly appreciated - particularly from anyone in the UK (where I live!!) Adrian Thompson

With the p2-450, definately go for the GF2 or GF1 DDR. Presently(or when the cards actually retails) the V5 is pretty taxing on the CPU. Check: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/fsaav5gf2part2/ for 450MHz benchies on both cards. >Which is best for playing DVDs? (I am having some problems with my >computer and DVDs at the moment.) Would I be better off going for a >separate DVD Decoder card like the Sigma Realmagic Hollywood card? H+ kicks ass. Skip the pass-through, only watch through TV-out, using S-video cables. Sweet, very close to set-top DVD-players. >Also, what is the difference between the Creative Graphics card which is >called the Ge-Force 256 Annihilator Pro and the Ge-Force 2 chipset?? Slightly different chipsets(GF vs. GF2), slightly faster memory on the upcoming GF Annihilator 2. The GF Annihilator 2 will be about twice as fast in 16-bit, though. >Any help will be greatly appreciated - particularly from anyone in the >UK (where I live!!) Discriminating, are we? ;-) Will a swedish response do? :) /Magnus

Hi Adrian, The GTS2 (Geforce2) has TV out and Power DVD 2.55. Voodoo is more of a gamers card without TV out. The best card for DVD is the ATI Rage Fury Maxx and a TV out. The best gamers card is the Voodoo 5500, and I own the GTS2. It just isn't a good card in my mind. To many little glitches and is a high maintenance card. If your primarily a gamer, go Voodoo. If you are a DVD fan go Rage Fury Maxx. It is the best card for DVD. Ok, what else. The Geforce 256vs. GTS2: fast cards but not hardware friendly. The GTS2 is the second generation of the GeForce, but with only a few upgrades. Not worth the $330 American dollars. If you decide to by a GTS2, by it from Creative (Annihilator2), not the Hercules ProphetGTS2, unless it doesn't have TV out <-(Annihilator2). Both chips are made by Nvidia, but Annihilator is the better card. I own the Rage Fury Maxx and it has awesome DVD. When the Voodoo 5500 is finally out it will be a great gaming card and will be as fast as the GTS2 if the drivers for it are well done. Hope I helped. Know why? You're neglecting to take the CPU someone uses into account. It's going to be mostly "as fast as a GTS2" only if the V5 is paired with a fast processor in the first place.

Add tax and you can kiss $500 bucks goodbye. GF2's range from $475 to $550 plus tax!!! To compare, my V3 cost me $269 the week it was released! This round of cards are rediculous in price. Hopefully V5/GF/GF2 will start some price wars soon. And I hope ATI gets something out the door soon as well. Not that I care about buying it, but just to see more competition ;-) >V5 should definitely be a reasonably nice card. You need some sleep! You almost said something nice about 3dfx ;-)

A condition may exist where the V5 and GTS may become near equals. Some of us dont really care about the low end CPU results very much. I dont plan on downgrading my CPU in the next year. :)

Hey Zod you're right, my old version of IE5 is horrible, with my Voodoo3 3000. In fact some of my older games are shit too with this card: Zork 1 and the original Flight SImulator look like hell. Damn 3dfx, they should get their shit together. >> Is there a problem with the V3 drivers? >> All my games are running fine. > >Try using different (older) versions if IE5. I believe that was when we had this discussion before. Like I said back then, it's gotta be an IE problem not a 3dfx driver problem. Cant blame 3dfx for problems with your system man..

That really is screwed up. V5 seems to be $50-$100 bucks cheaper than GTS here in Canada. I'd like to upgrade from the V3 but not at those prices. If we don't see some nice price drops this summer I'll probably wait for NV20/Rampage and see what happens. Maybe they will be worth $500 bucks. I think Diablo II will keep me busy until then anyways!

A GTS is around $425 here, and even the new Asus Deluxe GTS with tv in/out is a couple of bucks cheaper than the V5 5500. >I guess you have a DDR you're happy with, eh? Definitely. :) NV20 is what I will be interested in, this new generation of cards simply doesn't offer enough of a performance jump.

Hell, I've still got my V3 and I still don't consider current cards to be worth $500 bucks for me. The V3 still plays everything just fine. I'll be waiting to see what NV20 or Rampage has to offer. Maybe they will be worth $500 bucks. Not sure about Rampage but I think NV20 will be out this fall. I hope they have done two things with NV20: 1. Added some sort of accumulation buffer to equal 3dfx's FSAA. 2. Solved the damn memory bandwidth problem. I want a card that can do 1024x768x32 with 4xAA enabled at 80-100fps in even the most demanding games. Is that too much to ask for from NV20 or Rampage???
