The operating system is SCO Unix 3.2.2.

In the meantime the situations is as follows:

It seems that the problems that I have with SCSI are un-related to
the tape drive after all. After I had disconnected the tape drive
I run a thorough scan of the complete SCSI disk (via "badtrk") and
the system stops at track 34/21.

I reboot the system, add 34/21 to the bad track table and run a
complete quick scan. This one stops at 35/47.

I reboot the system, de-install the tape drive via "mkdev tape",
rebuild the kernel and reboot.

I run a quick scan on the first filesystem with an empty bad track
table to start with and the system stops at 22/10.

I reboot and copy the contents of two of the filesystems to my
primary disk (the third filesystem holds the Usenet articles and
is not so important :-).

Let me toss out a few possibilities here:

- The harddisk might be bad. I doubt that since the badtrk check
hangs the system completely and also stops at different locations
  every time I run it.
- The SCSI controller might be bad. Maybe ...
- The connection between the devices is bad. I bought the cable when I
got the disk (about 3-4 months ago); it's a standard MAC cable with
25 pin Sub-D to 50 pin Centronics connectors
- The terminator on the external box is bad. I just bought it from the
local CompUsa store; it's a standard 50 pin terminator with both a
male and female connector. One advise that I got from someone on Usenet
is to use an active termination instead of the passive one I have right
  now.

My "favorite" assumption is that I have some serious problems with the
termination of the SCSI bus - most probably with the external box.

Any ideas/comments?
