Speaking of proprietary interfaces, the other day I was trying to attach an
external SCSI hard disk (50 pin centronics) to an IBM PS/2 with IBM's SCSI
controller.  Funny thing, but we couldn't do it.  Wonder why?  Well, the
type of cable that plugs into the SCSI adapter is IBM's own special design.
It looks sort of like the one Sun uses, but bigger and opposite gender.
Turns out that a 3 foot SCSI cable from IBM costs about $120.  If they
think that the "let's make a proprietary interface for everything" approach
to PC sales works, they are smoking crack.  No one in their right mind
should pay $120 for a 3 foot cable.  I can buy a SCSI controller AND a
cable for that price (of course, the Micro-channel board would cost several
hundred more).
