Check interrupts. Microsoft Diagnostics (MSD) helps. Check: Mouse on
COM1,Modem on COM2. Where is your Joystick?? Probably also on COM1.
First Modem was probably on COM2 or COM4. When second Modem installed it
ate up COM1, probably trying to use COM3. (rem:COM1&COM3 share
interrupt, as does COM2 and COM4). Where is the clock? Q: have you
checked the battery? Does it die after long periods of computer disuse?
Battery may not be holding charge. Frequent use? Battery may hold charge
with frequent use.

Good luck.
