Dave Driver asks about a Compaq "without a built-in BIOS". He may mean
(1) that he can't get into the BIOS setup from the keyboard (all PC-clones
    have built-in BIOSes); or
(2) that the BIOS doesn't support 3.5" drives.

If (1), someone suggests he contact Compaq to get a diagnostics/setup disc.
This is good advice technically but maybe not financially. If he can get an
old copy of the IBM AT diagnostics/setup disc, or any other, or a program
to edit the CMOS RAM directly

If (2), he will need a BIOS upgrade (a replacement BIOS chip, likely to
cost silly money compared to the value of a 286). The actual change to the
BIOS code is likely to be one byte (tell it to allow up to 18 sectors per
track, not 15).
