Hooking up Amiga drive to IBM compatible.

I would like hook up an Amiga 4000 high density disk drive to my IBM
compatible computer. The reason, of course, is that there's no way
for a normal IBM drive to read an amiga disk. Does anyone know how
this could be done? Could I just plug it in safely? In any event, is
there software available to read the disks once it's hooked up?
Thanks for any info.

It's not the drive, it's the controller. Some of the IBM disk-copier
boards might be able to copy an Amiga disk; the normal floppy interface
can't handle it. As far as an OFS or FFS filesystem for the PC, good luck
finding one.

If you have an A4000, why not just use it to write the disks in MS-DOS
format?

Why not use CrossDOS that already comes with the Amiga OS? It can read
and write MS-DOS disks and even converts Amiga long-file names to the
MS-DOS 8 character/3 letter extension.

Or is the situation that you have the A4000 high-density drive, but not
the Amiga to go with it? :)

Don't bother...

Not quite; there's no way for a normal IBM PC-type floppy controller
to read the standard Amiga disk format. That's quite a different
thing, and has nothing to do with the floppy drive itself.

If you're looking for file transfers, use CrossDOS to build PC-format
disks on the Amiga.

Speaking of hooking up amiga stuff. I have a nice color monitor, a
1080 I believe, that was on an amiga system. Can I buy a cable adapter
that will allow me to use this monitor with a vga card? I appreciate
all responses. Thanks.

Afraid not Tony. The 1080 monitor has a fixed vertical frequency of 15.75 kHz. The
minimum VGA frequency is 31.5 kHz. However, the 1080 has a nice composite (CVBS)
input and depending on which model 1080, with the right cable, you can even get
Y/C (S-Video) input, via the seperate chroma and luma inputs. Also with the right
cable, you can hook up any device that outputs standard RS-170A RGB component video.

You probably won't be able to get any use out of that monitor - it's a 15KHz
monitor limited to around 60Hz refresh. In short, quite useless for PC
displays (which typically use 60KHz horizontal and 60-100Hz vertical).
Keep it on the Amiga where it's much more use! :)
