NEC double speed CD ROM drive no more ??

Hey there,
I just called a couple of mail-order companies and they told
me that NEC has stop producing their double speed cdrom drives any more.
Can anyone please confirm on this piece of news ?

Also, do anyone own the tripple speed drive ?
I am tempted to get one but am afraid that it might not be widely
supported in the future or CD's might never take advantage of the higher speed.
I now that current CD's wil not take the full advantage of the drive as the
material used is too soft for spinning at tripple speed.

Thanks for any info,
Ben.

Yes, this is true. NEC is moving onto their newer drives (due soon).
I purchased the 84-1 (external) version about a few weeks ago from CDW
at quite a discount because they're being phased out to make room for the new.

I'm curious with how much did you pay for it (the discount price)?
Thanks.

Something like that seems to be happening in the Uk at for some reason the nice
external multispin seems to have some down to a level almost on par with that
of the internal tosh double spin. Either their are mass assalting the market
of getting rid of existing stocks.

At the moment I have not seen any triple speed CD-roms. There were none in the
review of cd-roms in my pc mag.

The speil that current materials in cd-roms is too soft is rubbish.
Pioneer manages to produce a quad-speed 600K transfer drive using standard
cd-roms as the media. I have heard of no problems with them.
