Looking for comm program to allow quasi-windows

I've recently been told that there is an application for the Macintosh
computer called "layers" (or "maclayers") that will allow you to have
multi-window capability when connected to a host Unix system with socket
support. This is accomplished with just one connection.

I was wondering if there was the equivalent of this for an ibm type
computer, and if so, where I might get it. I would assume that some
kind of program would run on the Unix side, and I would appreciate a
pointer to that as well. I'd hope it's public domain/freeware, since
I'd like to just install this on our local Sun-sparc lan for use by
all our users.

Reply preferred via email, but post is fine too. I scan both often.
