For a quick fix, you could try creating a subdirectory and stick all
your files in that.  I don't know much about DOS's internal workings...
but I know that on the Apple II, ProDOS restricts you to 51 entries in
the root directory and imposes no restrictions on subdirectories.

Another option is FDFORMAT, which (among other things) can create a
larger root directory.  Look for fdform18.* on the FTP sites.
