HP DeskJet 500C -- Why WordPerfect Hasn't Written a Driver

REVISED June 11, 1992

> Note:  The HP DeskJet 500C will print graphics in color in
         WordPerfect 5.1 for Windows as long as the Windows
         HP DeskJet 500C printer driver is selected.  Also,
         the Fast Graphics Printing option must be UNMARKED in
         WPWin.  The Fast Graphic Printing option is found in
         the Print Settings dialog box under File|Preferences|
         Print.  This information also applies to the HP PaintJet.

> Note:  There is a GSS driver available (file dated 3/4/92) for
         DrawPerfect 1.x and PlanPerfect 5.1 that supports the
         HP DeskJet 500C in eight colors.  This driver is NOT
         available for download, but may be ordered by calling
         DrawPerfect Support at 800-541-5098 or 801-226-8766.
         The GSS driver will NOT work in any other programs other
         than DrawPerfect or PlanPerfect.

Explanation:
Hewlett-Packard has released a printer called the HP DeskJet 500C.
The printer has two modes:  a monochrome mode and a color graphics
mode.  In the monochrome mode, the printer is identical to an
HP DeskJet 500.  When the color ink cartridge is installed, the
printer is a graphics-only printer.  Since WordPerfect does not
rasterize the whole page and send it out as a graphic, it is unable
to support the printer in color.  It was decided between
HP and WPCorp that WP would not ship an HP DeskJet 500C driver in
5.1 because users may assume color support is available.  Users who
need a driver should use the HP DeskJet 500 driver that currently
ships with WP.

Current shipping products that use the same printer drivers as
WordPerfect 5.1 (DrawPerfect 1.1, PlanPerfect 5.1, and
LetterPerfect 1.0) do not have the ability to support the printer
in the color mode.  See GSS information above.

Users are welcome to submit enhancement requests via the
WordPerfect BBS by sending a message to Dale Bodily, or by leaving
a message on CompuServe to WPC Enhancements [73447,754].  Please
include the product name in your request, as well as the enhancement
you would like to be added to a future release of the product
(e.g.  I would like to have a future version of WordPerfect support
color printing for the HP DeskJet 500C printer).
