The EIDE HDD which I have seen (mainly WD) give around the same benchmarks,
but to be able to help you more I need a bit more information,
Using the WD Drive Rocket Utility you can observe specs that range from
800 kps for 512 byte blocks all the way to 5500 kps for 64 kb blocks.
The above test gives 2100 kps for an average throughput.

I assume that the Promise 2300 is a cached disk controller, which might be
your problem, if your old non-EIDE HDD is giving overly high specs.
