I have just upgraded a 386DX40 to a 486SX33 w/ VLB and an S3 video card. I am running OS/2 on it. I am having trouble getting the floppy drives [a 3.5" and a 5.25"] to work properly in that data read from them appears to be getting corrupt. I did a lot of testing before I decided that the floppies WERE actually corrupting data [whether it be copying a file, running an executable, or anything on the floppy]. OS/2 is not the problem, as it effects BOOTING from a normal DOS disk as well. I have found a CURE for the problem - I go into the BIOS, and DISABLE the INTERNAL CPU CACHE. When this is disabled, the floppies WORK FINE! [And the system is a LOT slower!] If I enable the cache again, the floppies corrupt data once again... Can anyone explain what is happening here, and especially how to FIX this strange problem, so that I can have the floppies working AND have the CPU run at its full speed [ie: with the cache ON] !!?? I will be happy to supply any other info if it will help. Thanks for any advice, Chris. csccm@lux.latrobe.edu.au
