Linux runs comfortably in 8MB, unless you use at the same time any two
(or three) of gcc -O, emacs, or X. The real culprit is gcc -O, which can
easily grow into 4MB.

To run gcc -O, emacs and X one needs around 16MB, and then it's rather
comfortable.
