New monitor on old Compaq transportable

My friend is getting eye strain from the small screen on his old Compaq
transportable. Is there any way to hook up a regular (monochrome) monitor
to it? (I would just open her up, but he is far away and loathe to do so.)

Thanks in advance for any info on this.
