Relisys scanner problem

I'm trying to sort out a PC (AST/Bravo 33/s) which has for some time
been runnig a (fairly old) Relisys scanner with a parallel
interface. The literature refers to an I/O address, which
is set by straps on the interface card, but no Interrupt or DMA. Picture
Publisher (Micrographx) works OK with the AQUIRE command, which uses
the TWAIN interface, but fails with the SCAN command, which works
direct. Wordscan (Calera) claims the board and scanner are missing. I'm
convinced this is not an I/O contention, as AQUIRE works, and I've
checked the addresses of everything else in the system.

Can anybody help with - interrupt or DMA information not in the book?
                      - anything you think I've missed?

If it works using the Twain driver then there probably isn't a problem
with interrupts or DMA.

I am not sure what you mean by "works direct". All scanners require
driver software but for common scanners this is often included in the
application software. I would expect that there is an error in the
configuration of that driver or that it does not support this particular
scanner.
