Need info/examples on parallel port programming

I am currently involved in a senior design project that requires me
to interface an external device to a PC parallel port and
control it using that port (since PC parallel ports are bidirectional).

However, I have run into a wall getting any sort of documention
beyond an overview of the parallel protocol itself (in Seyer's
book). What I really need is a text that explains how the port
is programmed as well as some good examples.

Can anyone out there recommend a good book, send me examples/instructions,
or tell me where I can ftp them?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Daryl
