Detect/Set size of EGA display

I need info on how to set/detect the number of rows and cols
of an EGA display.  I notice that MSC has a set_videorows()
function but thre is no similar function for setting 
the number of columns.  Or is this so EGA specific that there
is no generic way of doing it?
