redirection indicated in argc

I was using Microsoft C, and had a program that used command line
arguments and read the standard input. When I specified:
command arg1 arg2 ... argn-1 < filename
The argc variable reflected the presence of the filename.
i.e. it had the value n+1.
When I specified:
type filename | command arg1 arg2 ... argn-1
it was not indicated, i.e. it had the value n. I think this must
be a compiler bug. -David-

Could someone please tell me the command line parameters for MOUSE.SYS, the mouse device driver distributed with Microsoft Word 4.0? Running strings on MOUSE.SYS, I see a warning message about /i and /c, but when I try to use these, (like "device=C\word4\mouse.sys /c:1" in my config.sys), I get "invalid parameter" and the driver is not installed. I really believe it will take command line switches, but I just can't get any combination to work. The reason I am asking is I just bought a cheap serial mouse (IMSI brand, $29 from Jade). The driver supplied with the mouse works for everything I have tried except for WORD in graphics mode (text works fine). Then the buttons work, but the cursor is invisible. The WORD reference manual mentions this symptom, and advises using the mouse driver distributed with WORD. When I try to use Microsoft's MOUSE.SYS, during boot it reports "mouse not installed." I suspect it is only looking for a bus mouse and needs a command line parameter to tell it to use the serial port. Unfortunately, the WORD documentation says "See the manual that came with your Microsoft Mouse," and I can't find a manual on this campus. So I need your help. Thanks - Mark (davis@cs.unc.edu or uunet!mcnc!davis)

In C programs argv[0] is supposed to point to the name of the program currently being run (in this case command). Thus argc will always be at least 1. If arg1 is present then argc = 2, etc. Filename is never passed to the program because DOS opens the file and attaches it to stdin. --John -- John Covington WN4BBJ E-mail: cs00jmc@unccvax.uncc.edu P.O. You may also wish to check the version of your MOUSE.SYS; Microsoft distributes a new version every couple of weeks, it seems. I could be completely wrong, but I think the most recent version I've seen is something like 3.64A or 3.65A. Patrick McCarthy mccarthy@well.uucp

It it doesn't find one anywhere, the mouse driver refuses to load, assuming that a mouse is not installed and not taking up any memory. Check the manual for your own mouse. It should have some way of having your mouse emulate a Microsoft mouse. An example, I have a DFI mouse but if I hold down the left mouse button on power-up, it will emulate a Microsoft mouse and the Microsoft driver will load. The newest version is 7.0. Hope this helps... OA

Well, the price of the book is only $10 less than the price of your mouse, but the _Microsoft Mouse Programmer's Reference_ (Microsoft Press, 1-55615-191-8, 1989, $29.95) has the info you need. The switches are /B for Bus or InPort mouse at primary InPort address; /I1 for InPort mouse at primary; /I2 for InPort mouse at secondary; /C1 for Serial mouse on COM1; and /C2 for Serial mouse on COM2. There are a couple of other parameters that set speed and sensitivity, but some of them only work on the InPort mouse. -- jamesd@techbook.UUCP ...!tektronix!nosun!techbook!jamesd - 8N1 +1 503 644-8135 TECHbooks: The Computer Book Specialists - Voice: +1 503 646-8257 12600 SW 1st - Beaverton, OR - 97005 - MCI Mail: TECHBOOKS Free freight on electronic orders
