MPU-401 Troubles

Hi all.

Sorry for the big list of groups that I've sent this message, but I
really would like to get a response to my "boggle". (Please send
responses via email to nickmooney@softhome.net, as I really can't
download all the newsgroups I've posted to. I hope you'll
understand.)

I've got a Packard Bell Pulsar 20 PC with an Aztech Labs really good
soundcard, with an MPU-401 Chipset.

In Windows 95/98 I use the Wavetable that Windows comes with, and Midi
is really nice.

However, in DOS, it's a completely different story. There are drivers
for the MPU-401 which load in the autoexec.bat, and it says which IRQ
the card is on (10) and the Port it's on (330), but no sound comes
from it.

I've configured my games (Including Ultima 8, Warcraft 2...) to use
the MPU-401, and they don't give any errors at all. So, I start the
game and there is no Midi at all. But no errors either??

I've checked the volume controls and mixers and stuff, but they're
fine.

I get sounds from the same card if I tell it to use Sound Blaster Pro
Compatible on IRQ 5, Port 220, and midi from the SBPro Compatible on
220 and 388, but, as you can imagine, it's pretty dire.

The card is just OEM, so no tech support from Aztech, and no
newsgroups to post to, no driver disks, no manuals. I only have the
drivers that are on the CD with all the stuff on it.

If there are any DOS Wavetable drivers out there (There doesn't seem
to be any with the CD, I've run every EXE and COM file it came with)
which I can use.

I'm an advanced Windows/DOS user, so I'll know what to do if you ask
me to do it. I'm just really stuck!

Thanks for listening. Please reply via email (only!) at
nickmooney@softhome.net

Hope to hear from you soon,
--Nick.

Do you have a midi synth connected to the external midi port??

MPU401 is for either external midi synths connected to the midi/joystick
port, or for daughterboard connected on a waveblaster port, assuming your
card has one. My Aztech card from Packard Bell does. It's a 26 pin
connector, two rows of 13 pins each. If your board has this, you may want to
consider an upgrade. I got a Yamaha DB50XG for mine and oh what a difference
it made.

This card uses the Vortex Chipset, software midi currently is only
supported under the windows dos box, under plain dos you either have
to live with OPL3 sound or if your card has a Waveblaster connector
you can get a midi card. On the other hand this method has an
advantage it doesn't depend on emm386 to be loaded like the Creative
cards do. Therfore your card will even run with Ultima7.
