Possible bad SB Live 5.1?

Had a Live 5.1 working fine under Windows XP for several days (with both
XP's standard and the web site's updated drivers), then one day no sound --
it shows up as a "VGA Device". So, I see the regular solution for that is to
move to another PCI slot. Well, when I do that it has appeared as:

Multimedia Audio Device
PCI Device
VGA Device
Token Ring Network Adaptor

This is on an Asus P4T-E (no built-in sound). All devices have been removed,
except for the AIW 8500DV. Automatic or 'net driver search finds no matches.
Tried safe mode to delete anything showing up wrong; tried forcing the Win98
drivers from the CD; tried forcing XP's built-in drivers and it says "cannot
find enough resources".

Safe to assume this thing's defective? Again, it worked initially without
any problem and produced sound fine for several days.
