Playing two WAV files at the same time ?

Hi Folks I need to be able to play two audio tracks at once, e.g. two MP3 or one MP3 and one Wave file on our Radio Stations' PC. Has anyone any suggestions as to how this can be achieved? If I try it with one card (AWE64) the second track can't play as the audio device is in use. Would two cards enable this? How would I direct the second sound to only the second card? Is there a real-time mixer programme that can achieve this? Any suggestions would really be appreciated -- mark@soundout.demon_dot_co.uk (Replace _dot_ with . to reply)

This is one way of doing this, but not the easiest. Geting two
soundcards to work in one machine is *not* easy.
There are a number of special cards out there which will do this
with ease. Look for DMAN (among others). They have the aditional
benefit of having S/PDIF output so you can get good quality from them.

This also exists in several forms.
Notes:
1) Get hold of the magazines 'Sound on Sound' and 'Future Music'
which cover this area very well.
2) I suspect that 2 MP3 files would be too much for most machines -
convert the MP3s to WAV for the playback.
Regards,
Harry.

Played on WinAmp when I used to have NT, on a P166 a single MP3 only took 16% (128kbps, stereo, 44KHz) of the processor time. TB

Hi Mark My EWS64 does it good. A multi wave mixer tool I know best is Cool Edit Pro Playing one single MP3 with WinAMP is about 20% CPU of a P166 (but, o.k., SCSI UW disks-;) I hope this helps HJW Mark Painter schrieb in Nachricht <897301211.21412.0.nnrp-06.c1ed05ac@news.demon.co.uk>... >Hi Folks > >I need to be able to play two audio tracks at once, e.g. two MP3 or one MP3 >and one Wave file on our Radio Stations' PC. > >Has anyone any suggestions as to how this can be achieved? >If I try it with one card (AWE64) the second track can't play as the audio >device is in use. >Would two cards enable this? By modern i mean hi-end pentium class or higher. The only proggy i would recommend for playing multiple MP3's is winAMP ver 1.6. (newer versions don't allow you to- but please correct me if i'm wrong). Check the checkbox labelled "Allow multiple instances" or something like that. It'll allow you to open multiple winAMP windows and you can play an Mp3 with each, assumming your soundcard is able to. This way I can play 4 mp3's on my IP188MMX + Gravis UltraSound PnP w/ RAM. I recall the MonsterSound could do multiple digital audio streams as well, but i think (but not sure) it's done by software mixing... To Mark: UltraSound PnP/PnP Pro's are now dirt cheap. Probably the cheapest way to get multi-wave playback. Have a look around. -Thanh

1) Guilluemot HSP64, EWS64 both do multi streams (numbers of streams above 8, seems limited by CPU) 2) Monster Sound cards can do multi streams (up to 23 stereo in hardware using DirectSound) Those are two I'm aware of...I'm sure there are many more...mainly any of the boards based on the DREAM chipset (HSP64, EWS64) should do multistreams The Monster sound is cheaper here in the US by about 50 dollars than the HSP64....but with the HSP64 you get S/PDIF out/in, good S/N ratios, RCA out/in, and some other very nice features, Great for audio apps...ok for games. Monster is a much better game board in that it supports A3D audio in hardware. Where as the HSP64 only supports MSDS3D, and poorly at that. So my .02 cents worth. Since your going to be using for audio/radio get the HSP64. I know winamp mentions this feature (i havnt tried it) but the program i'm thinking of actually software mixes the two (or more) audio files into one buffer for the soundcard, so in effect you can use any old card. My guess is that you want to 'segue' or overlap songs, yes? I've been through all these questions myself as i'm setting up an automated radio station. BTW, do you know what software your station's using? > This is one way of doing this, but not the easiest. Geting two > soundcards to work in one machine is *not* easy. Actually i put two AWE64 golds in a machine and it was one of the easiest installations i've done, win95 recognised them both straight away, no conflicts or software probs at all. PJee wrote in message ... >through all these questions myself as I'm setting up an automated radio >station. BTW, do you know what software your station's using? Yes we use the Radio Wolf package. It's incredibly cheap and does the job. It has a lot of minor irritations, but for the price it's just right. But if you know of a better one... The only 'real' complaint is the lack of being able to fire a jingle while a track is playing. If you have miss timed the news for example, its a pig not being able to fire the next track early. If Wolf had a 'fade quickly and start next track now' button it would solve all the problems! The main problem is that the mixing has to be done in real time - not pre-recorded as most emails to me have suggested. If anyone can suggest a different radio-friendly package at a price that a community radio station can afford (I.E. next to nothing) please let me know. Thanks everyone for your input. I will be having a serious look at the options over the next week, and will report back my findings to the group. Regards all Mark Painter http://www.soundout.demon.co.uk

The next one up that i know of (ok, theres a bit of a price jump) is a nice little program called Raduga (i think the URL is www.themesearch.com, downloadable demo) Mixes mp3's and wavs, some good features and is about US$600. Of course most automation software (like RCS, Audio VAult) tends to be too expensive for small operations and starts to require its own proprietry soundcards.
