Demo Group?

Before Christmas there was some talk of a PC group demo group. Is
there still any interest? If there's enough, I'm willing to do the
gruntwork. There are a couple questions and comments.

Are there enough members of demo groups on Usenet, and would more find
access if such a group appeared? Most of these guys are in Europe and
Scandinavia, and while we obviously have people posting from there I
don't know how hard it is to get access. Renaissance has a strong
presence, but I don't know on the rest.

Obvious uses of the group are announcements of new demos, discussions
of new demos (something that's sadly missing, from what I've seen),
information about the demo groups, etc. Anything else revolutionary
I'm missing? We need a fairly good RFD.

Would this just be a discussion group, pointing people to ftp sites to
grab the actual demos, or do we need a binaries group as well? We
can't post the huge binaries for these demos on the discussion group.
Would an "alt.binaries" group be sufficient for the binaries? We
already have an "official" ftp site.

How do we make sure this is not seen as a general software demo group,
so we don't get posts about a demo version of Ultima Underworld or
Borland C, etc.?

If the demos group is primarily discussion driven, it should probably
be "comp.sys.ibm.pc.xxx" (where xxx is the name of the group). The
alt group (if needed) would be "alt.binaries.xxx". If this is going
to be binaries driven it needs to be "comp.binaries.ibm.pc.xxx" and
"comp.binaries.ibm.pc.xxx.d".

Let's talk! Can someone get in contact with members from some of the
groups who don't have Usenet access?

My personal belief is that the demos group should be a derivitive of some
programming base. Not language specific, more like something from
comp.os.msdos.programmer.demos This is because, if it is just left as an
altxxx group, more than likely it WILL turn into a demos of Ultima and stuff
like that, which already has enough room to talk on.

I don't personally think we need a suplement to the current FTP sites
(one of which is WASP.ENG.UFL.EDU) with a type of .binaries group. This
would be too much for some sites to deal with (imagine if you were like me
and you get newfeeds via modem and the UNREAL would be UUENCODED by some
nimrod!)

I do believe there would be a good use for a newsgroup for talking about how
the various groups are coding there demos. I know Joshua Jensen and other
members of Renaissance have been helpful to other prospective demo makers,
and it would be nice if that info could be controled, not spewed all over
the soundcard newgroups.

I'm currently working on some graphics demos myself, and some of the
techniques I've been working on would be good discussion topics for a base
like xxxx.demos. I'd also like to hear other groups talk about there demos.

Just a personal opinion, but I'd love to get a feed of a demos group.
Any other comments?

Tim.

Well, definitely the main group would be a comp.xxxxxx group... if
not, there's no reason to go through all the formality of creating the
group. I was just wondering if an alt.binaries group for the demo
code would be useful. It's easy to create later if it turns out to be
usefull, I guess.

I REALLY like your suggestion of putting it under programmer.demos. This
should make the content more clear.

That's why such a group should be put under one of the binaries
hierarchy if that's all it's going to be - they're set up for such a
thing. The amount of GIFs posted in a day there would make anything
we could do pale in comparison :).

That's what I was thinking of... getting together, talking about
demos, rating them, talking about upcoming stuff, there should be a
lot to talk about.

A big part of it, of course, is how many members of the demo groups
would be able to read/post.

I say go for the DEMO usenet newsgroup thingy.

I'll make sure I spread the word on the DEMO site so I'm sure we could
get over 40 votes. Who knows, maybe a couple hundred....

Uh, Future Crew, The Phoney Coders and TRSI (did I get it right, Otto?) are
here too.

I'm really interested in the creation of this group. I was suprised
that there wasn't a group for it already.

How exactly DO we vote? I'd like to vote YES...

I SEZ: If you know the system & got the time then LETS DO IT!

Well GET those 100 YES votes!!! Who's gonna vote against a small demo section?
